Wake Tech's First Golf Tournament a Success
Proceeds to Fund Scholarships for Athletes
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 28, 2009) —

A "hole in one" highlighted Wake Technical Community College's (WTCC) first annual Athletic Scholarship Golf Tournament. Forty golfers teed it up on Monday, April 27 at Devil's Ridge Golf Club in Holly Springs, home course for WTCC golf teams. The money raised will help athletes with tuition costs, as state funds cannot be used for scholarships.

Golfer Taj Franklin had the drive of the day when he captured a "hole in one" on the par three, hole number eight. He won a prize of his choice by Nike.

Results for the Captain's Choice tournament are as follows:

  1. Resolvit with a score of 60
  2. Follett Bookstores & Brian Skinner Team tied for second with a score of 61 each
  3. Simplex Grinnell / Lechase Construction with a score of 63

All of the winners won a free round of golf at area golf courses.

"The support of the community is critical to the success of our athletic program," says Barry Street, WTCC Athletics Director. "Scholarships will help Wake Tech recruit some of our area's most talented players and keep our teams competitive and strong."

Wake Tech is also seeking private donations to help send the golf team to the NJCAA Division 1 Men's Golf National Championship, to be held May 17-22 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail River Course in Owens Crossroads, Alabama. Wake Tech qualified for the National Tournament by winning first place in the NJCAA Region X, Division 1 championship on April 22.
